Piedmont Avenue has it all!
Our business district is full service providing all the amenities of a “great neighborhood”. While at the same time a Bay Region destination with icons like Fentons Creamery and Restaurant, and J. Miller Flowers & Gifts, not to mention and fascinating historical landmarks and a weekend mash of critically acclaimed entertainment.
Architecturally the prevailing old Oakland craftsman charm puts its arms around an eclectic blend of locally-owned one of kind shops. In the middle of the district is Piedmont Theater which is surrounded by outdoor cafes, tea houses, and ice cream by the scoop. Take time to view two murals at 41 st by Rocky Baird which show the history of the area from his artist’s point of view. Four & five star restaurants offer leisurely dining after shopping the antique and vintage shops, boutiques, jewelry stores, bookstores, and art of living stores which are a browsers delight. The nearby Broadway Center with it’s Long’s Drugs, open 24 hours, offers additional shopping opportunities.
The comfortable neighborhood ambience is elevated by the weekend community arts and culture events scene. It is easy to bump into international jazz star performances, flamenco, a Day of the Dead procession, opera, tea tastings and art shows. Locals and visitors can get lost in the magnificent Julia Morgan built Chapel of the Chimes mausoleum and then refresh themselves walking the 225-acre Mountain View Cemetery designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
Signature events include the beloved Halloween Parade where 1,500 families and children stop traffic the Saturday before Halloween each year and the month long April Tulip and Art Festival which is a celebration of spring. On the avenue during December weekends, we become a charming village of sparkle, music and a real Santa. Mountain View Cemetery has magical evening lights that have been a drive around tradition for generations and Chapel of the Chimes provides family photo ops for that holiday card with their 15 foot Christmas tree.
Our boundaries are Piedmont Avenue from Broadway to Mountain View Cemetery.
